After 6 years of training and gaining 25kg of muscle, I know what life is like to be thin and unhealthy and how it is to be fit and muscular.
This post is about the many life-changing advantages I experienced through this great sport, while next time I will write about the few disadvantages it has.
In the process of changing your body the way you want it to look like, chances are high that you will get compliments from friends, family or your co-workers which will boost your ego and might give you confidence.
These things may be nice to hear but shouldn’t be the reason for your confidence, otherwise, you have an extrinsic instead of an intrinsic motivation for your training.
Your confidence should come from your progress in the gym, from losing fat and building muscle, from adding more weight to the bar and enjoying your time there.
Everything because you decided it to be this way, and your results show that you made the right decisions.
If you’re big and jacked you will get more respect.
You will get it from people in and outside of the gym.
Having an aesthetic physique is something money cant buy and everyone knows you have worked hard for it- it’s a status symbol.
People won’t get in your way or want to get into a fight with you (even if you don’t know any martial arts, they assume you could whoop their ass only because your forearm is bigger than their upper arm).
When I kindly ask someone at the gym how many sets he or she has left at some machine it often happens that they go straight into their last set and rush through it like I am standing next to them with a gun.
Sometimes people would even laugh at your jokes even if they’re not funny but only because of your impressive physique.
These moments make you think ”Mhmm, this joke wasn’t funny enough for you when I was 30kg overweight…”.
When a bodybuilder sits on the train, he will mostly be the last person people want to sit next to him.
Even if he is a really nice guy he just has this aura of discipline and respectability which maybe some people “fear“.
When you see the first time positive changes in your physique you know that you are doing something right and that the discipline which led you to go to the gym 5 times a week, to eat the right food and sleep enough has paid off.
Every time you leave the gym you feel better than before and even if you weren’t in the mood to go to the gym first, it is the discipline which made you go there.
Month after month you become stronger, more muscular, and leaner. And before you even notice it, this discipline becomes part of your life and you see no reason to skip a workout or a meal.
You do what you have to do, to get where you want to be.
Its one of the most disciplined sports in the world and the discipline learned through bodybuilding will be transferred in other aspects of your life.
Health and Nutrition
With training and the right nutrition, you will build muscle and lose fat.
To understand what is good nutrition you will have no other choice than to inform yourself about calories, carbohydrates, protein, fat, vitamins, and minerals.
Therefore you will become more conscious of what you eat & drink and will make healthier choices.
As we get older we begin to lose muscle mass and with working out we can fight against this process, increase our bone density and reduce the amount of bone loss with aging.
Physical activity and weight training help releases of the brain chemical endorphin, which positively influences your mood and makes you more focused.
Working out can also relieve stress and help you sleep better.
You will gain knowledge about things you wouldn’t even hear about if you wouldn’t have begun with bodybuilding.
From anatomy, nutrition, supplements to exercises, improving athletic performance, diets and different kind of workout routines.
I wouldn’t have known that zinc can help with acne, that the body needs a certain amount of protein in order to build muscle or that you are only allowed to train chest on Monday (joking) if I wouldn’t have begun with this sport.
It’s interesting to know which movement activates which muscle and how many calories do I have to decrease to lose fat or which food is a good source of magnesium.
You become a stronger person, and I am not only talking about your body but also your mind.
Bodybuilders have a great mindset and a strong vision.
They envision themselves how they want to look like or how many reps they will do in their next set of squats.

Every workout they push themselves to the limit with the knowledge that in order to grow they need to make some progress in the gym in form of more weight or more repetitions.
No matter if they train for themselves or try to get ready for a contest, bodybuilders are never satisfied with their physique (which might be a disadvantage of bodybuilding), but you definitely have to have a strong mind for this strive for perfection.
If you listen to interviews of Dorian Yates, Kai Greene or Arnold Schwarzenegger you will notice that they all have a powerful mental attitude.
You can build your Body
The most obvious reason for people to enter the world of bodybuilding is that they actually can build their body the way they want it to look like (as far as your genetics allow).
Nearly all people who started with this sport weren’t satisfied with their physique or just wanted to make the best out of it.
My goal is to make the best out of my mind and my body, that’s why I write this blog its the workout for my mind while the gym is the way to build my body.
While some bodybuilders found their motivation in seeing superhero movies like superman, I wanted to look like brad pitt in fight club and always liked the aesthetic ancient greek statues.

No matter what your motivation for working out it is, visualize the body you want to have it and sculpt your body just like a sculptor would have his perfect symmetrical sculpture in his mind.
